Fire Atlas
The Mattole Watershed is home to five volunteer fire departments or companies that serve to protect our communities and ecosystems from wildfire impacts as well as critical emergency response. They include: Petrolia Volunteer Fire Department, Honeydew Volunteer Fire Company, Telegraph Ridge Volunteer Fire Company, Whitethorn Volunteer Fire Department and Whale Gulch Volunteer Fire Company. Because wildfire crosses watershed boundaries, MRC works closely to partner with other departments in our ‘fireshed,’ especially with regards to mapping and other services that will aid them in their endeavors.
The Mattole Fire Atlas is a digital and physical mapping resource for CalFire, local volunteer fire departments/companies and other emergency personnel. The Atlas displays critical emergency information that tracks responders while in route. Information includes: type of road, structures, locked gates, water tanks, bridges, and other information that may be used in the event of a wildfire. We update the Atlas as regularly as possible to account for changes in the watershed’s homes and infrastructure.
