JJ was a communicator and a bridge builder. He moved between the communities of our watershed with grace and contagious cheerfulness. Always energetic, always helpful, he would give thoughtful answers and ideas as he tugged on his great gray beard.

He worked hard every day to improve our community,- working with landowners of all stripes to make our homes safe from fire and our rivers clean, introducing us to our neighbors, opening gates, playing us music. He had
a sense of the strength of our watershed's family, of our ability to make our world a better place when we work together for a common purpose. He worked to bring down community barriers and find common ground throughout his life, both in the Mattole and beyond.

He deeply respected Nature and her spirits, and dedicated much of his time to helping us feel their presence. He found good company in the rivers and forest, and peaceful rejuvenation on the waves of the sea.

His perspective, experience, pragmatic idealism, and twinkling eyes will be greatly missed.
